Tears into Rainbows, Congregational Confession

There are two versions.  One for all to say the confession together, the other parsed for differing contexts of a diverse congregation.

Version 1 – as a congregational confession

God through painful rain and redeeming light:

Have mercy on us.

We bring our tears in our hands.

Tears wept upon the middle passage where humanity was ripped from us.

Tears wept in cotton fields, on bridges and in diners,

in court rooms and in dreams the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.

Tears wept by those who long held power.

Tears wept out of recognition

the world we take for granted was built on the whipped backs of our enslaved brothers and sisters.

Tears because in order to gain freedom, some returned to a land they never knew as home.

Tears because we all are still seeking home today.

Tears wept in a repeating unrepentant history of blame, arrogance, hatred and apathy.

We have not loved You, Jesus.

We have not loved You in one another.

We have not loved You beyond skin, beyond language, and beyond borders.

Forgive us, we pray.

Shine your redeeming light through our tears

so rainbow sight might come into our blind eyes

so we can see the promise of Your presence

so we can see You in everyone.

Children of God,

Christ came in the midst of our broken skies as light.

God has made his home among all people,

And God, himself, will wipe away every tear.

In the Name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven.

In the Name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven.

Celebrate visions of God in each of us!  Amen!

Prayer from 1 Corinthians 13

Love be patient; Love be kind.
Love teach us faithfulness; Love teach us humility.
Love show us gentleness; Love show us joy.
Love help us forgive; Love help us keep no score.
Love lead us to justice; Love lead us to truth.
Love endure, trust, and hope when we cannot.
Love never fail.  We’re depending on You.
God, You are Love.  Amen.

Rainbow Prayer

Holy God of Noah,

Whose love brought salvation to all from the floods of chaos and hatred:

In the Rainbow you gave your promise to all your creation-

A promise of love for the animals tall and small, spots and stripes, lion and lamb,

A promise of acceptance for the diversity and variety of your creation,

A promise of affirmation, belonging, and grace.

Like light shining through the prism,

Refract us to be the rainbow promise of love to the world.

Refocus our lives around your Gospel message of hope.

Redirect our vision to be the reflection of You, Jesus.

For you are the one who rises

Above the crowd’s violence,

Out of death’s dark tomb,

And to bring the rainbow light of resurrection, Amen.

Prayer about our Marriage to Christ

Lord who binds us together,
who helps us with our knotted lives,
and who breaks the bonds of sin and brokenness.
We the church are your Bride.
As we gather together,
We thank you for the gift of relationships.
We thank you for the challenge to love in our relationships.
We thank you for the forgiveness and new beginnings born in relationships.
Help us see one another as you see us.
Free us to trust in one another as we trust in you.
Guide us in life as our loving Groom, Jesus Christ, Amen.

Prayer for Dreams

Lord of Vision through night and day:
Our nights and days are filled with nightmares
where hatred divides and differences are highlighted to exclude.
Give us dreams.
Fill our minds with insights into a bright future.
Fill our hearts with love to reach out to one another.
Fill our souls with your promises and your presence.
All because of Christ who died, Christ who is risen, and Christ who comes again.  Amen.

Worship for First Sunday of Lent 2019 “Temptation”

Call to Worship by Nathan Decker

God, we hunger for a word of guidance from you.

The desert winds have dried up our springs of hope.

The stones look like bread, and we throw them at the needy in our disillusion.

Our leap of faith suddenly feels like a fall from grace.

We have worshiped power.

We have failed to love one another.

We have failed to hear one another.

We have failed you.

But you Christ faced these temptations.

You refuted the twisting of scriptures.

You denied trusting in false hope.

You stood firm against the easy road.

Oh, God forgive us

and lead us to the love of Christ on the Cross.

Morning Prayer by Nathan Decker

Christ who came as God in the flesh

and faced down the temptations:

Lead us to the true bread of love so that all are fed.

Lead us to leap in our love of God and Neighbor so that all are welcome.

Lead us to fall down and worship you instead of power.

For you gave up the power of heaven,

For you were unwelcome among us on earth,

For you were hungry and left to die.

Christ who came as God in the flesh

help us face down the temptations you have conquered.  Amen.

God the Baker

Great Baker,
Mix in our hearts the ingredients of your holiness.
Stir in us love, joy, peace, and mercy.
Sprinkle intentional faith that seeks to grow.
Add a dash of courage and the zest of passionate worship.
Fold into our innermost being your presence.
Help us rest so that we may rise.
Preheat the fire of Pentecost’s excitement,
and cook us with the warm grace of Christ.  Amen.

Thanksgiving Table Prayer

Thanksgiving Table Prayer
God of Abundance,
As we gather around this table,
We remember
that this table is connected to your table,
the one where you broke bread and gave it to your disciples.
We remember
that all we have been given is a gift from you,
a gift we are called to share.
We remember
that Thanksgiving for us is not just a day
but a way of living our lives in constant prayer to you.
We remember and give thanks today.
<Everyone around the table shares for what they are thankful>
We remember and give thanks today,
through Jesus who gave himself for each of us.  Amen.

Prayer for Pledge Sunday

Working, Saving, and Giving Lord,
You have called us
   to be your disciples
to go into the world proclaiming your good news
and to care for lost, the least, and the left out.
Today, we are setting aside time for promises about our work, our savings, and our giving.
Whisper wisdom as we hold out our hands in hope, discern our part in your Kingdom work, and trust in you who gave all, Amen.

Prayer for Labor Day 2018

Creator, Redeemer, Sustainer:
Six days you labored to birth the cosmos,
Thirty years you walked this Earth showing us compassion and salvation,
Day after day you breathe upon us as Spirit,
and then you rest, and then you rise, and then you pause.
Today, we take a break from our labors and celebrate the work we been given.
Thank you for work and pay.
Thank you for planting and harvesting.
Thank you for purpose and meaning.
Bless our sweat, our stress, and our success.
Bless our rest, our pause, our Sabbath.
In the Name of the Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer, Amen.
