Morning Prayer based on Genesis 28

Lord who holds every place within you:

You are in this place and we did not know it.

We came with hurting hearts and anguish

from the journey in the past.

We came with shaky thoughts and anxiousness

for the journey ahead.

Come, whisper your words of forgiveness

to us and through us.

Come, loosen the stress in our minds and muscles.

Come, give us rest and dreams to inspire.

Come…

Amen.

Confession and Pardon

Great and Holy Auditor of the Way we spend our time and gift:

We have been selfish in our generosity

and break the budget of 24 hours daily

cramming fruitless and self-serving endeavors.

We borrow from Peter to pay Paul, Mary, Josephine, and more…

We have no intention of settling debts.

We rob you of time with us.

We ignore your advice and whispers of love.

We owe love.

We owe humanity more respect.

We owe each other a second chance.

Our line of credit is bankrupt, our love has filed chapter 11.

Our lack of love embarrasses you, your church, your message.

Our apathy grows in our portfolio of abuse ensuring our own safety and self-preservation at other’s expense.

Forgive our interest and lack of faith principle.

Free us from greed and complacency.

Elevate us beyond market values into Kingdom values through your deposit on the Cross of Christ Jesus.

Hear the Good News!  Christ collected our debt and paid it all.  God’s love loosens the belt and gives us grace.  We are free.  We are loved.  We are forgiven.  Share peace and forgiveness as you have received in the name of Jesus.  Amen.

Collect for a Small Group

Great Whirlwind, Burning Bush, Still Quiet Voice, LORD;

who hovered over the chaos of creation,

who breathed inspiring spring life into all creation,

who walks among us still in this fragile and tattered garden.

Challenge us to learn from one another,

so that we may recall your Spirit speaks through all creatures,

so that we may experience your presence and light in one another,

so that your voice will be in the tones of our conversation.

Jesus, Emmanuel, Wisdom Come Down in the Flesh, Amen.

Lament for the loss of a Child

“Why” Does not tell the tale within, Lord.

The feelings are far to deep.

The burning in our bones for reason, justice, answers!

He/She died to young.

Our tear drenched eyes still see him/her.

Smiling up from the cradle,

Crawling on the floor,

Walking down the aisle,

Running on the playgrounds of life.

Where are you!  This was too soon!  Not Right!  Not like this!

Where are you now?  We feel abandoned in our loss.

Come, Lord, Jesus,

catch our tears.

Come, Holy One,

hold our aching hearts.

Come, Lord, Jesus,

and we will fall upon your arms,

rest our weary heads upon your chest,

and place our pain in your scars.  Amen.

Temptations

Lord, we hunger.
“Turn the stones into bread”
Lord, we want easy answers.
“Isn’t it written…”
Lord, we want power.
“I will give you all of this if you bow down to me…”
God calls us to care for creation
not to reshape it for our own purpose.
God calls us to follow Christ
even when we don’t understand everything.
God calls us to lay down our desire for power
and take up the Cross.

Then we will be filled.
No more hunger.
Then we will find peace.
No more searching.
Then we will bow before the one true God.  Amen.

We are Broken

Lord in your mercy hear us as we gather in worship:

We are broken.

Our connection with you shattered by neglect.

We are broken.

Our relationships with one another stained by guilt and power.

We are broken.

Our society systematically abusing and using the least and the helpless.

We are broken.

Our ears deaf to cries.  Our eyes blind to tears.  Our hands immobile to serve.

We are broken, but we are not hopeless.

Lord, heal us from the inside out.

Heal our souls that we might begin the work of making the world whole.

Blessing of the Backpacks

God who teaches us every day how to make Earth a little more like Heaven, we lift to you today, these students.

Give them your patience to understand the problems on paper and in the hallways.

Help them commit themselves to study and learning in the school year ahead.

Bless each of them.

Lord, put your hands on these backpacks.   Fill them with school work and reminders of the love and care of this church.  Surround them each school day with your Spirit.

Look after the teachers and workers in our schools. Sustain them with your peace, patience and perseverance. Help them know how appreciated they are and that this congregation embraces their call to teaching and learning and surrounds them with love and care as well.

We pray in the name of Jesus who we seek to follow day by day. Amen.

Morning Prayer based on Revelation 6

We will follow you, Jesus.
We will follow you to the battlefields within our own nation, standing with the police and the oppressed.
We will follow you to the streets, combating the poverty and injustice that enslaves our neighbors.
We will follow you to hospitals and homes, visiting the sick.
We will follow you to the grave, weeping over Lazarus, holding to the promise of resurrection.
We will follow you, Jesus, riding on to victory,
because you are our God.  Amen.

Prayer for God not to Forget

Lord, you know how busy we are.
We have work.  We have bills.
We have family.  We have friends.
We need a vacation from our vacations.
Not to mention all the ways we are busy serving
on committees, as volunteers, as servants.
Lord, you know how busy we are,
If we forget you, please do not forget us.  Amen.
