Invitation to New Life based on Luke 19

Christ our Lord invites himself to our Table

Calls us out of the sycamore tree, inspires us to charity.

Christ our Lord invites us to see the world differently.

Generously giving half of what we own,

Providing a path for the poor.

Christ our Lord invites us to live in peace with one another.

If we have cheated anyone, let us repay them four times!

We seek a life lived through justice.

We seek relationships filled with wholeness and peace.

Christ our Lord invites us to salvation,

to seek and save the lost.

Let us come down and dine with Christ!

Prayer to the Word

Word in the flesh,

who is within our hearts waiting to be shared on our lips:

Parse our actions,

Translate our misguided love,

and Write your story in our lives

so we can be one:

One as a book of humanity,

One as a chapter of the Church,

One as a sentence moment in which you are both subject and verb.

One Word.

In the name of the Eternally Speaking and yet often unheard Lord, Amen.

Invitation from Matthew 22:1-14

We have come because somebody invited us.

An invitation was required?

Yes, and proper attire as well.

Isn’t that a little old fashioned?

The invitation is from Jesus Christ.

He calls us to come and worship with our hearts.

The requirement is that you put on Christ.

Let us worship as people on the way, Christians, Children of God.

We have come because somebody invited us.

Who will we invite?

Compelling Invitation (Call to Worship August 2009)

The Lord sits at his table and awaits his invited guests,

Yet they do not come, filled with excuses.

Christ invite us, let us come even when our excuse is

“I don’t feel like it today.”

Christ invite us, let us come even when our excuse is

“We’re doing this too often, didn’t we do this once already this month.”

Christ invite us, let us come even when our excuse is

“I just don’t feel worthy to be with God today.

Christ invite us, let us come as the Lord at his table says

“Go out at once into the streets and lanes of the town,

bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind, and the lame.

Compel people to come in so that my house may be filled.”

Who is my Neighbor? (Call to Worship 2009)

Who is my neighbor?

Is she rich or poor?  Do they look like me, talk like me, act like me?

Who is my neighbor?

Is he a Christian?  Do they have the same values as I do?

What team do they cheer for?  What God do they pray to?

Who is my neighbor?  The lawyer asked the question.

We want to ask the question.  We want to justify ourselves.

Radical Invitation for Communion (October 4 2009)

Christ, our Lord, invites us to his table

Who is this us?  All of us?

The poor, the blind, the lame, the outcasts?

Christ, our Lord, invites us to his table

The old, the young, the divorced, the married, the single?

Christ, our Lord, invites us to his table

The migrants, the homeless, the troubled, the unknowns?

Christ, our Lord, invites us to his table

Christians, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Atheists?

Christ, our Lord, invites us to his table

The abused, the abusers, homosexuals, AIDS patients?

Christ, our Lord, invites us to his table

Christ, our Lord, invites us to his table

to learn to live in peace together,

to learn to live repentant lives together,

to learn to love God and neighbor together.

Christ, our Lord, invites us to his table.
